The scientific research activities of the Section of Foreign Languages of the Institute of Lifelong Learning of the University of Žilina follow the scientific research focus of its employees and the projects implemented and prepared, while a great emphasis is placed on reflecting the requirements of practice and following new trends in the teaching of foreign languages. The scientific research activities of the Institute meet the quality requirements defined in the quality standards of the University of Žilina, which at the same time are dynamically developing within the framework of European language policies.
The orientation of scientific research activities can be divided into two groups:
1. Linguistics
Within linguistics, it is mainly applied linguistics, with a focus on the issues of foreign language teaching and also translation; furthermore, comparative linguistics, in which various linguistic changes and relatedness or differences within two or more languages in a particular area are studied; sociolinguistics, focusing mainly on the relationship between language and society, or a particular society; and last but not least, interculture and intercultural competences, together with mass media communication, with an emphasis on the specifics of the English language used in the media.
2. Methodology
In particular, the focus is on the quality and effectiveness of foreign language teaching, the use of ICT in foreign language teaching, testing, academic discourses, working with professional texts, language popularization, making teaching more attractive, adult education in general, as well as adult education with regard to their job classification, e.g., further education of teachers.
